Mekong Quilts has several quilters’ groups in Rumdoul district.
The different handicrafts in Rumdoul
The women have been trained as quilters and after a few years, they have become very skilled. A small “baby quilt” takes about 1 week to make. Artisans manage to roughly double their income, depending on how much work they get from the social enterprise. This in turn depends on sales!
The Papier Maché group employs about 8 women. Old paper is processed to make beautiful decorative objects, even waterproof vases etc. The months before Christmas are the busiest for this group!
The bamboo groups make bamboo loudspeakers for smartphones, basket, bamboo straws to replace the plastic ones, and even the famous Kidboo: a strider for children of 3-5 years old.
